It doesn't matter if you've found a new pet rabbit, bought one from the store, or one that has escaped and returned, you need to learn more about rabbit pregnancy if you're an owner.
You have to know when your rabbit is pregnant in order to give it the proper care, so knowing the indications of pregnancy upfront is important. Today we're going to go over the various ways you can figure out that your rabbit is pregnant. Hopefully we can help you get a better glimpse of the treatments she is going to need.
You won't have to worry about it for a long time, because rabbits only go through a 35 day pregnancy. Just keep in mind if you believe she's pregnant, and then keep track of the time. If forty days rolls around and there aren't any kits, then you may have to try again if you're breeding.
Around about two to three weeks in to the pregnancy, you might be able to feel small lumps that are the developing kits. You will want to avoid touching her stomach at all unless you have experience with pregnant rabbits, because being too rough can actually injure or kill the kits. At this point, the babies are about the size of jellybeans, and they are fairly delicate.
Probably the biggest sign is when your rabbit begins nesting. Inside the cage you'll find lining of soft materials that are isolated from everything else. If you're new to breeding, don't be afraid if you see her taking her own fur out and adding it to the lining. It doesn't happen all the time, but really depends on what is in the cage. We recommend adding the soft materials so she doesn't do it. You may even do it regardless, which is called false pregnancy.
Plus, there are times when the rabbit's mood will tell you just about everything. It's almost as if she will become bi-polar and if you notice the swings, then she could be pregnant. If this occurs, don't try to pet her because she'll just move away. She also might start chew more or scratch. What it comes down to is you just have to watch her behavior closely and see what's going on.
The whole idea behind giving you these signs and symptoms is to help you figure it out on your own. Then again, we still recommend you take her to the veterinarian. They can quickly do an x-ray and figure out if it's for real, or just a false pregnancy. Plus, they can give you some pretty helpful hints for the proper care.
Make sure that you are aware of the signs that your rabbit might be pregnant; it can be very important for her health that you are aware of this fact!
